We are in our third year of assisting parents
in the religious formation of their deaf or
hard-of-hearing children.
This has been, and will continue to be, a learning process for all
involved as we journey together toward a deeper relationship with God
and His faith community.
Our general goals
involve helping to lead each child into a conversion that comes from
understanding, relationship, and experience of community. Our primary
tasks in this family-centered endeavor include suitable catechesis,
Christian spirituality, communal celebration of liturgy, and apostolic
service. Since parents have the key role in passing on their faith and
teaching their children a Catholic way of life, they are participants in
this process.
Jesus always had
compassion and felt strongly for the poor and those outside the
community. It seems that some within the community feel that as far as
the Church is concerned, they are outside the main community – not for
anything they have done, but because they are different. If we look to
Luke's Gospel, we'll understand that no matter how bad our situation, we
are included in the Church because of Jesus. Even when you can't get the
resources you need or someone for an interpreted Mass, or if you have to
travel distances for religious education or to find a priest who
understands – you still have the right to be included. Perhaps making
that feeling of inclusion and belonging a reality for our children is
one of the greatest challenges we face in this program, especially when
they belong to different parishes. One of our primary objectives is to
make the children feel welcomed and loved...and to know the love of God.
